On October 22, 2026, two major 911 systems across California suddenly malfunctioned, causing chaos. Callers in Oakland and Riverside County could not reach emergency dispatchers at times due to the outage. The Oakland Police Department (OPD) reported computer glitches starting late Wednesday night, with all calls being rerouted to the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office.
On October 26, it was revealed that a copper wire theft caused Oakland's entire 911 system to fail for nearly two days, after thieves vandalized critical AT&T infrastructure, severing both copper and fiber-optic lines. This led to emergency phone lines, internet, and the computer-aided dispatch system going down. In Riverside County, authorities issued an alternative emergency number 951-776-1078 for residents who couldn't reach 911.
