Story summary

Michelle Landry, the five-term Nationals MP for Capricornia, announced on October 23, 2026, that she will retire from federal politics at the next election. Her decision clears the path for Matt Canavan, the Nationals leader, to move from the Senate to the House of Representatives to run in Capricornia. Landry has held the seat since 2013 and is proud of her accomplishments, including securing funding for projects worth over $6 billion for the region.

Capricornia covers approximately 90,000 square kilometers and includes Rockhampton, the Capricorn Coast, and parts of the Bowen Basin. Landry's departure makes the seat vulnerable to One Nation, which could field its national director James Ashby as a candidate. Both Canavan and Ashby reside in Yeppoon, within Capricornia. Landry emphasized her commitment to serving out her term and criticized One Nation for trying to dictate her decision-making process.
