On October 23, 2026, Steven Frederick Johnson, a 74-year-old former police officer, was found guilty by a Supreme Court jury in Warrnambool for the murder of Christopher Jarvis in June 2006. Jarvis, 38 at the time, disappeared from his home in Wangoom on June 13, 2006, and has never been seen since. Police believe he was dumped in a shallow grave after being killed over a dispute about $2000 in unpaid rent. Johnson had argued another man was responsible for Jarvis's death but was convicted despite his not guilty plea. Family members were emotional during the verdict delivery, while Johnson maintained his innocence and declared he "served this state" before the court. His bail was revoked, and sentencing will occur at a later date.
