Story summary

Prime Minister Andy Burnham met with Poppy Appeal collectors and armed forces veterans at No 10 North in Manchester on Thursday to kick off the Royal British Legion’s annual campaign. Among those present were Bradford schoolgirl Ivy Knighton-Leake, six, who is one of the country's youngest volunteers, veteran Anthony Coughlan injured in Afghanistan, former RAF Senior Aircraftwoman Naomi Hall, and former Army Captain Laurence Moore.

Burnham emphasized gratitude to veterans for their service and sacrifice, noting that donations would support those who have served. Meanwhile, the government launched a campaign encouraging citizens to stockpile supplies but clarified it would not provide specific shopping lists despite earlier suggestions. Instead, they plan to publish information online so individuals can make informed decisions about what to store at home in case of emergencies.
