The Supreme Court is scheduled to hear two cases in December challenging bans on "assault weapons" in Cook County, Illinois and Connecticut. The local governments involved filed briefs this week urging the court to uphold these bans, which they argue are necessary due to the role of AR-15 rifles in causing what they describe as "the most tragic and frightening crimes." The cases, Viramontes v. Cook County and Grant v. Higgins, will determine if such bans violate the Second or Fourteenth Amendments. Both localities outlaw the purchase of AR-15s and similar semiautomatic rifles, arguing that these weapons are not ordinary firearms.
