Democrats need to adjust their strategy to attract more working-class voters without alienating other supporters, according to new research from the Center for Working-Class Politics. The study, conducted between April and June, surveyed 40,000 adults to understand what might draw these voters to the Democratic Party. Key findings indicate that working-class voters are less likely to support Democrats if candidates endorse issues like defunding police, transgender girls playing on girls' sports teams, or gun control, which respectively drop voter support by 5.7 points, 5.6 points, and 4 points.
Jared Abbott, the center’s director, emphasized that candidates should focus on economic populism and be seen as part of the working class themselves rather than members of an elite group. He noted it is more effective for candidates to speak about issues in a way that resonates with these voters and reflects their own beliefs than to avoid controversial topics altogether.
