Gerson Moreno-Riaño, who fled Colombia in 1980 due to the violence perpetrated by communist revolutionaries of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC), will vote for the first time since becoming an American citizen in 1991. FARC spent half a century terrorizing Colombia, killing thousands and displacing over 7 million people. Moreno-Riaño, now living in Miami after moving to Rochester where he became a U.S. citizen, reflects on the significance of his upcoming vote nearly four decades later.
