Seven people, including a father and his two sons, were killed when a passenger jeep plunged down a mountain slope near Sathra Podemar village on the outskirts of Muzaffarabad, Azad Jammu and Kashmir, on Sunday at around 12pm. The vehicle fell approximately 1,000 to 1,500 feet below the road after losing control while passing through a landslide-affected stretch. All seven occupants died at the scene.
The jeep had set off from Nakka Shakkar Pattiyan village for Seri Darra village, having traveled only three kilometers when the accident occurred. The deceased were identified as 40-year-old Abdul Waheed, who was driving; 30-year-old Muhammad Khalid; 35-year-old Shafaat; 50-year-old Fayyaz Ahmed; and his sons Ubaid Fayyaz (27) and another son (17). Residents retrieved the bodies before personnel from Rescue 1122 arrived.
Road accidents are frequent in mountainous areas due to dilapidated roads, careless driving, and poorly maintained vehicles. Questions have been raised about the fitness certification of ageing and locally altered vehicles, as well as the effectiveness of transport safety regulations enforcement by authorities.
