A 39-year-old woman was sexually assaulted at knifepoint in Central Park on Saturday night around 8:30 p.m., near East 66th Street and Fifth Avenue. The attacker approached her with a knife, dragged her into a wooded area where he raped her before fleeing the scene wearing all black clothing and carrying a black backpack. She was taken to a hospital and is currently in stable condition.
This assault is the fifth reported rape in Central Park this year, increasing local residents' fear of nighttime walks in the park. Police have intensified patrols but no arrests have been made as of now. Mayor Zohran Mamdani condemned the incident, emphasizing the need for everyone to feel safe in public spaces at any time of day. NYPD continues its investigation while community members express heightened concern over safety within Central Park after dark.
