Devin Jacob Ballard, a 20-year-old US Marine stationed at Futenma Air Base in Okinawa, Japan, has been indicted for robbing and murdering Anna Yagi, a 39-year-old woman from Naha City on October 3. According to the indictment, Ballard strangled Yagi with a telephone cord and stole her backpack containing a wallet before fleeing the scene of the crime.
Local police arrested Ballard walking alone in Okinawa late at night following the incident and later charged him with robbery and murder after discovering that he had taken Yagi's belongings from the hotel room. The case has reignited long-standing tensions over the presence of US military bases on Okinawa, leading to public protests and condemnation by Japanese political leaders.
Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi described the crime as "brutal and heinous" and called for strict disciplinary action against US military personnel and measures to prevent similar incidents. As a result, the US military imposed a curfew and alcohol ban on soldiers stationed in Okinawa following the indictment.
