Thomas Childe, a 24-year-old chronic cannabis user from West Yorkshire, was sentenced to six years and eight months in prison at Leeds Crown Court for the manslaughter of Colin Starbuck, a 79-year-old pensioner. The incident occurred on October 29 last year when Childe deliberately rammed his bike into Mr. Starbuck after being told off for riding on the pavement without lights near a Tesco in Garforth, West Yorkshire.
Childe had previously been selling cannabis and was on his way to withdraw money to buy more drugs when he encountered Colin Starbuck at a bus stop. After being rebuked by Mr. Starbuck for cycling on the pavement, Childe became annoyed and made a deliberate decision to confront him physically. During their altercation, Mr. Starbuck attempted to put Childe in a headlock but was ultimately thrown into the road, where he struck his head.
Mr. Starbuck had an underlying heart condition, and it was determined that the cardiac arrest suffered during this attack led to his death. The judge at Leeds Crown Court emphasized that Childe's actions were intentional and showed no remorse when questioned by police after his arrest.
