As of October 26, 2026, the UK Treasury announced plans to extend parental leave pay to self-employed fathers and partners as part of measures aimed at easing living costs. The package includes tax cuts for workers who drive for work and reduced tariffs on certain foods, making weekly shopping 40p cheaper. However, despite these efforts, the Joseph Rowntree Foundation warned that families will still be up to £770 a year worse off in this parliament. Additionally, the national living wage for those aged 21 and over is set to rise from £12.71 to £13.20, marking an increase of 3.9%. In contrast, the minimum wage for individuals aged 18 to 20 will only rise slightly from £10.85 to £11.27 per hour, ending Labour's pledge to align it with the living wage. This move aims to address concerns that young people are being priced out of job opportunities.
