Voters in British Columbia ended nine years of rule by the left-of-center New Democratic Party on Saturday with a landslide victory for the provincial Conservative Party. The Conservatives won 48 percent of the vote and secured 64 out of 93 seats, marking their first government in nearly 100 years. Premier David Eby had called an early election barely a month ago, likely hoping to capitalize on internal turmoil within the opposition party. However, his gambit backfired as the Conservatives capitalized on public sentiment, despite having previously been beset by leadership issues and defections.
