On October 27, 2026, UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan honored Indian Captain Smit Machchhar and the flydubai crew members with the First Class Order of Zayed II for their bravery during a mid-air attack on September 30 aboard flight FZ1073 from Dubai to Tel Aviv. During the incident, Machchhar was severely injured by his co-pilot, an Omani national identified as Hamam al-Hammami, who used a crash axe and caused the plane to plummet nearly 14,000 feet in under 30 seconds. Despite being critically wounded, Machchhar managed to regain control with assistance from fellow crew members, preventing what some considered a potential terrorist attack on Israel. The aircraft safely landed in Saudi Arabia after two off-duty pilots, Henson Steven from Fiji and Rowan Tooth from South Africa, took over the controls.
