As part of Wednesday’s budget, Chancellor John Healey announced a £7.5 million direct Treasury investment for a Queen's University-led research hub focused on cyber and AI industries in Northern Ireland (NI). The government is also hosting an investment summit to strengthen east-west trade between NI and Great Britain, highlighting the region's unique position as "the only place in the world with dual access to both the UK internal market and EU market" under post-Brexit rules. Additionally, Healey provided a £100 cost-of-living payment to around 20 million households in qualifying council tax bands across England. NI will receive extra funding through the Barnett formula, which allocates money for devolved matters to Scotland, Wales, and NI if there is an increase in central investment in England. Stormont ministers now have the option to introduce a similar cost-of-living scheme using the consequentials from this policy in England.
