As of October 28, 2026, Danielle Smith, Premier of Alberta and leader of the United Conservative Party (UCP), has successfully fended off internal challenges to her leadership. In an email to UCP members, party president Rob Smith (no relation) announced that at least 65 out of 87 constituency associations supported keeping Danielle Smith as their leader, preventing a leadership review before the next provincial election scheduled for October 2027. This comes after some local party boards had requested a leadership review following last week’s referendum where Albertans voted three-to-one to stay in Canada and not pursue independence.
To further solidify her position, Premier Smith mandated that all candidates seeking seats on the UCP's 18-seat provincial board must sign a declaration respecting the outcome of the separation referendum. This move aims to quell discord within the party over separatist sentiments among some members. Despite this requirement, pro-independence activists have indicated they will sign but maintain their long-term aspirations for an independent Alberta.
The leadership challenge and internal divisions highlight ongoing tensions within the UCP regarding provincial autonomy versus federal unity, with Premier Smith navigating these complexities as she prepares for the upcoming election.
