On October 29, 2026, John Lee, Hong Kong's leader, apologized and announced that Winnie Ho Wing-yin, his housing secretary, had resigned after an investigation found inadequate oversight in the city's deadliest fire in decades. The massive blaze, which broke out last November, engulfed seven buildings at Wang Fuk Court and killed 168 people. According to an independent committee’s report, the fire was likely caused by a cigarette. The investigation also revealed that both the Housing Bureau’s independent checking unit and the Buildings Department had failed in their supervisory duties. Additionally, the authorities alleged that two companies involved in the maintenance work conspired to defraud apartment owners with concealed litigation records, securing a contract worth over $38 million. Former residents have been waiting nearly a year for accountability regarding ignored warnings, substandard building materials, and disabled fire alarms. In response, Hong Kong has pledged reforms and vowed to pursue those responsible.
