As of November 5, 2026, hundreds of offshore workers could lose their jobs due to new weight limit rules set by Offshore Energies UK (OEUK). The guidelines require all workers to weigh less than 124kg (19.5st) when wearing civilian clothing and footwear for helicopter evacuations in emergencies. Since announcing the policy last year, the number of workers over this limit has dropped from around 2,200 in early 2025 to fewer than 300 currently. Employers are providing extra fridge space for weight loss medication, with up to 60% of staff using such drugs to meet the threshold. The Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) warned that rescue winches cannot safely lift heavier individuals, prompting this new regulation aimed at ensuring worker safety during emergencies.
