On October 29, 2026, after a snap election that saw the B.C. NDP lose from 47 to 28 seats in the legislature, the NDP caucus unanimously appointed Jennifer Whiteside as the party's new interim leader. David Eby had stepped down following the defeat. Whiteside, who represents New Westminster-Coquitlam and was previously labour minister and education minister, stated that she felt humbled by the recommendation. The caucus also named Mike Farnworth as house leader and Niki Sharma as caucus chair. Whiteside acknowledged that British Columbians sent an "important message" to the NDP by placing them in opposition status.
