Australian fitness star Joanna Wietrzyk has apologized for continuing to race in a HYROX event in Beijing despite soiling herself and potentially endangering other competitors. The 24-year-old world record holder admitted her decision to keep racing was wrong and said she is truly sorry for affecting others. After suffering from diarrhea midway through the September competition, Wietrzyk's actions sparked international debate and backlash. She told BBC that the incident and subsequent social media reaction were "traumatic." HYROX has since introduced new rules giving race directors power to remove athletes if their vomit, urine, or feces pose a risk of contamination or threat to others' welfare. Wietrzyk plans to return to competition in Hamburg, Germany, on Friday.
