Ahead of the midterm elections on November 7, 2026, soaring electricity bills are becoming a major issue across the United States. According to data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration, residential electricity costs have increased by approximately 5% nationwide over the past year. In key states like Maine and Ohio, where Senate races are competitive, electricity costs have surged even more dramatically, with increases of 16% in Maine and 12% in Ohio.
An ABC News analysis shows that five out of the top 10 states experiencing the most significant electric bill hikes are currently hosting competitive U.S. Senate elections. Additionally, a recent poll by ABC News/Washington Post/Ipsos reveals that 57% of Americans now find their utilities unaffordable, up from 45% in February. The rising electricity costs stem from various factors including the need for costly upgrades to an aging energy grid and other operational expenses.
