Tanzania and Angola have reached an agreement to connect their rail corridors, linking ports on opposite coasts of Africa. This move would combine the Western-backed Lobito Corridor with the China-backed TAZARA line, stretching from Angola’s Atlantic coast through Zambia and DR Congo to Tanzania’s Indian Ocean coast. The connection is expected to facilitate access to Congo's rich deposits of copper and cobalt, minerals crucial for economic security during the global energy transition. By merging these corridors, it positions Zambia and DR Congo to benefit from both Western and Chinese investments without having to choose sides in their growing competition. The Africa Finance Corporation has recently selected contractors for sections of the new Zambia-Lobito railway, further advancing this ambitious project.
