An Italian military helicopter serving with the EU peacekeeping force (EUFOR) in Bosnia crashed on Thursday during routine training near the town of Brcko, killing four people and injuring 11. The victims included two soldiers and two Red Cross volunteers. All those on board were Italian nationals, including Army sergeants Simone Ruggia and Claudio Marchesi, Red Cross Lieutenant Franco Adriano Zecchillo, and emergency response technician Laura Procacci, the first woman to reach that rank in the corps. The crash occurred about 180km north of Sarajevo; no civilian infrastructure was damaged or civilians injured according to EUFOR statements. Rescue teams immediately responded, and all injured personnel are receiving medical treatment and are reported to be stable. Italian Defence Minister Guido Crosetto extended condolences to the families of those killed. EUFOR, a 1,200-soldier mission operating under a UN Security Council mandate since 2004, continues its investigation into the cause of the crash.
