As of November 3, Binance announced that North Korean hackers stole up to $6.3 billion in cryptocurrency through a sophisticated scheme involving fake job interviews, making it the largest crypto theft on record. The hack exploited an internal AI tool and compromised the laptop of an employee, known as Engineer A. Binance initially froze over $2.54 billion worth of funds following reports of a potential security issue on October 30th. Stablecoin issuers Tether and Circle also froze over $1.5 billion in assets to prevent further losses. Although the exchange reassured users that their funds were safe, it later suspended withdrawals globally as part of its response measures. Binance has since launched a full-scale review with third-party cybersecurity experts and is investing more in AI tools to detect security threats. North Korea dismissed U.S. allegations linking them to the hack as "absurd rhetoric," while FBI investigators continue their probe into the incident.
