On October 27, 15-year-old Javits Frimpong, an immigrant from Ghana, was fatally shot while walking to school in the Bronx, New York City. He sustained a gunshot wound to the stomach around 9:25 AM near East 171 Street and Third Avenue in Claremont. Three male suspects, believed to be between 16 and 18 years old and dressed entirely in black, fled the scene after firing shots.
The incident drew international attention, with Ghana's foreign minister coordinating with local authorities. President Donald Trump agreed to grant an immediate visa to Javits' mother so she could attend her son’s funeral from Ghana. Mayor Zohran Mamdani communicated directly with Trump about the case and announced the visa approval on social media.
The shooting has highlighted issues of bullying, immigration, and gun violence in New York City's schools, impacting immigrant communities particularly hard.
