Paul Yip, founding director of the Centre for Suicide Research and Prevention at the University of Hong Kong, visited United Court, a transitional housing estate in Tung Tau, Yuen Long run by the Hong Kong Sheng Kung Hui Welfare Council. He highlighted that residents need more than just physical shelter to feel at home; they require stability and a sense of belonging within their community. Nine years ago, Yip participated in a poverty study where he found families living in extremely cramped conditions with limited access to basic facilities like kitchens and bathrooms. Such conditions can lead to mental health issues due to the lack of space for rest, study, and family time.
