Federal officials spotted a critically endangered North Atlantic right whale entangled in fishing gear on October 21, 2026, in the Gulf of St. Lawrence between New Brunswick’s Acadian Peninsula and Quebec’s Îles-de-la-Madeleine. The entanglement was not noticed until this week when scientists reviewed footage from a surveillance flight conducted by Fisheries and Oceans Canada. With only an estimated 384 North Atlantic right whales remaining, the department is planning to use a satellite tracker if they can locate the whale again in order to attempt disentangling it. The type of gear entangling the whale has not been identified, nor has the specific whale itself.
