The Betsi Cadwaladr University health board, serving about a quarter of Wales’s population, plans to close urgent primary care centers (UPCCs) at Ysbyty Penrhos Stanley in Holyhead, Ysbyty Alltwen in Tremadog, and Ysbyty Gwynedd in Bangor by April 2027. These centers were established across Wales since 2020 to alleviate pressure on GP practices and emergency departments. The board cites funding and recruitment issues for the closures, which have sparked criticism from local politicians who warn of dire consequences, including increased strain on already overburdened services. MPs and MSs from various political parties wrote letters expressing concern that without these centers, patients may struggle to receive immediate care when unable to get an appointment with their GP.
