As of November 2, 2026, Tong Ying-kit, Hong Kong’s first national security law convict, has been among four individuals released early from prison according to sources cited by the South China Morning Post. Tong was sentenced in July 2021 to nine years for inciting secession and engaging in terrorist activities under the Beijing-imposed national security law. Additionally, ex-Apple Daily publisher Cheung Kim-hung, Chan Tsz-wah, and Andy Li were also granted early release after their high-profile convictions related to the same law. This development comes three years after Tong expressed regret in an official television documentary produced by Hong Kong’s Security Bureau, where he said he had been misled by false information during the 2019 unrest.
