Ciara Mageean, an Irish Olympic athlete and European champion, died on Sunday at age 34 after a battle with stage four bowel cancer. Her funeral was held in Portaferry, County Down, where hundreds of mourners gathered to pay respects. Mageean, who won gold in the 1500m at the European Athletics Championships in Rome in 2024, had been diagnosed with terminal cancer in 2025 and completed her memoir shortly before passing away. She married Thomas Moran just weeks prior to her death, determined to give guests a memorable wedding day despite her illness. The event drew notable attendees including Irish President Catherine Connolly and Northern Ireland First Minister Michelle O'Neill, highlighting Mageean's impact across the island of Ireland.
