A 24-year-old woman named Rachel Apa died after collapsing near the finish line of the New York City Marathon on November 1, 2026. Apa collapsed in Central Park, approximately two miles from the end of the race during her first marathon attempt. Her father told The New York Times that she had sent him a text complaining about pain before she collapsed. She was resuscitated by bystanders and medical staff but later died at Mount Sinai Hospital. According to reports, Apa’s cause of death is believed to be rhabdomyolysis, a rare condition triggered by intense physical exertion which can lead to muscle breakdown and kidney failure.
