Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis called for a global maritime truce on October 29 after a drone attack sank a Greek container ship off Bulgaria's coast. The attack was part of a series of strikes targeting ships in the western Black Sea this month, raising concerns over freedom of navigation and escalating shipping insurance costs. Speaking at a UN Security Council debate, Mitsotakis emphasized that targeted civilian commercial shipping is unacceptable and urged adherence to international law governing maritime disputes.
The Contship Jet Monrovia, a Liberian-flagged freighter carrying more than 400 terracotta-colored containers from Israel to Romania, was struck by three Russian naval drones on October 28. All 18 crew members were rescued, but the vessel sank off Bulgaria's coast. The attack disrupted grain exports and threatened Ukraine’s economy.
Following the incident, commercial maritime operators experienced a significant increase in war-risk insurance premiums, with rates spiking by 14% within 24 hours of the strike. This highlights the vulnerability of trade corridors in the region amid ongoing conflicts.
The sinking of the Contship Jet — a commercial container ship chartered by Israel’s ZIM Integrated Shipping Services — by three kamikaze naval drones off Bulgaria’s coast should serve as a stark wake-up call for Western naval planners.
Indeed, the Black Sea has now fully devolved into an operational laboratory for deniable, low-cost gray-zone warfare.
