In the 2026 elections, Democrats unexpectedly won several congressional districts in Florida that had been heavily gerrymandered by the Republican-controlled state legislature earlier this year to favor GOP candidates. Rep. Kathy Castor, a Democrat who has held her seat since 2007, was reelected with more than 5 points over Republican nominee Mike Beltran in District 13, which had been redrawn to include rural areas that voted for Trump by more than 10 points in the previous election. Similarly, Democratic candidate Pia Dandiya was winning District 22 by more than 3 points against Republican Casey Askar. Additionally, Democrats won other redrawn districts like Districts 20, 25, and 9, where incumbents Debbie Wasserman Schultz, Jared Moskowitz, and Darren Soto were likely to win despite the redistricting efforts. Political science professor Kevin Wagner noted that when people perceive economic issues as problematic, they may be more open to voting for alternative candidates, potentially explaining this unexpected outcome.
