Rep. Richard Hudson, R-N.C., lost his re-election bid on November 7, 2026, according to NBC News projections. He was defeated by Democrat Richard Ojeda in North Carolina’s 9th Congressional District, a seat Republicans had held since 1963. Hudson served as the chairman of the National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC), the official party organization tasked with winning or maintaining control of the House. His defeat follows that of former Rep. Sean Patrick Maloney in 2022, who also lost after heading a Democratic campaign committee. Republicans had significantly reduced their investment in North Carolina’s Senate race weeks before the election due to Democratic former Governor Roy Cooper building an insurmountable lead over Republican candidate Michael Whatley, whom then-President Trump endorsed.
