Peggy Flanagan, the Democratic nominee and Minnesota's Lieutenant Governor, won the state's Senate race over Michele Tafoya, a Republican backed by President Donald Trump. With about three-fourths of the ballots counted, Flanagan led with 54% of votes to Tafoya’s 43%. The race was closely watched due to issues stemming from the Trump administration's immigration crackdown in Minnesota and fraud scandals involving daycare centers. During her campaign, Flanagan vowed to "rip ICE apart" following fatal shootings by federal agents earlier this year, which became a rallying cry for progressives. This victory is significant as it makes Flanagan the first Native American woman elected to the U.S. Senate.
Minneapolis was also the epicenter of anti-ICE protests in opposition to Trump’s deportation agenda.
Federal immigration officials shot three people in the city early in the year, killing both Renee Good and Alex Pretti.
