In the recent Iowa House race on November 7, Sarah Trone Garriott, an Iowa State Senator and Democrat, defeated incumbent Rep. Zach Nunn (R-IA), securing her victory with 54.6% of the vote when the Associated Press called the race at 12:03 a.m. This marks the first time since 2022 that a Democrat will represent Iowa's 3rd Congressional District in Congress, which includes Des Moines and much of southern Iowa. Nunn received 45.4% of the vote but was convinced by President Donald Trump to stay in his race despite difficult midterm conditions for Republicans. Garriott is an ordained Lutheran pastor who previously flipped a Republican-held state Senate seat in 2020 and successfully defended it in 2024, even as Trump carried the district. During her campaign, she emphasized her opposition to banning biological males from women’s sports.
Trone Garriott defeated Rep. Zach Nunn (R-IA), marking the first time a Democrat will represent the Hawkeye State in Congress since Nunn flipped the seat in 2022.
Nunn considered a run for governor this cycle but was convinced by Trump and congressional leaders to remain in his race as Republicans stared down a difficult midterm environment, to maximize the GOP’s chances in holding the seat.
