In the 2026 election on November 7, Denise Powell defeated Brinker Harding, flipping Nebraska’s 2nd Congressional District blue. Powell won with 57.7% of the vote compared to Harding's 40%, according to the Associated Press. This marks the first time in a decade that Democrats have regained control over this district, which had previously swung for former Vice President Kamala Harris in 2024 by 4 points. The race gained national attention, with Powell receiving support from the Congressional Hispanic Caucus and several House Democrats, while Harding was backed by outgoing Rep. Don Bacon, President Donald Trump, and Senators Deb Fischer and Pete Ricketts (R-NE). Powell's victory is significant as it represents a shift in political power within Nebraska’s historically competitive Omaha region.
Powell aimed to tie Harding to President Donald Trump and his policy agenda throughout the campaign, saying his “allegiance” lies with the president who endorsed him.
Powell based her platform around lowering costs, growing the local and national economy, and protecting democracy. She supported ideas like stopping Trump’s tariffs, expanding Obama’s Affordable Care Act, passing a long-term Farm Bill, and reestablishing USAID.
