On Sunday, November 1, 2026, 40,000 volunteers in Bhutan built 108 Buddhist stupas along a 12 km stretch of the Mau Chhu River near Gelephu. This event set a Guinness World Record for constructing the sacred structures within nine hours. The project is part of an initiative to establish the Gelephu Mindfulness City (GMC), a planned city envisioned by Bhutan’s King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuk as a global economic hub focused on mindfulness and sustainability. One stupa was dedicated to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, reflecting India's support for the project. The stupas serve as spiritual markers and are expected to attract tourism and investment to boost Bhutan’s economy.
