Democrat Rebecca Cooke defeated incumbent Rep. Derrick Van Orden (R-WI) on November 7, flipping Wisconsin's 3rd Congressional District in a rematch of the closely contested 2024 election. The Associated Press called the race for Cooke at 12:48 a.m., with her receiving 52.4% of the vote to Van Orden’s 45.8%, based on 91% of ballots counted.
The district, located in western Wisconsin, has been shifting between parties recently. Republicans won it in both 2022 and 2024 but saw a narrow victory for Van Orden over Cooke by just 2.7 points in the latter election. President Donald Trump also secured the district with 52.8% of the vote against Kamala Harris's 45.5%, reflecting its tendency toward split-ticket voting, where voters support different parties for various offices.
The district was similarly competitive in 2020, when Joe Biden won it by a slim margin of 46.7% compared to Trump’s 51.4%, giving Trump only a 4.7-point advantage there.
