Qatar is searching for ways to recover $4 billion in lost monthly revenue from its liquefied natural gas (LNG) exports. According to a Baker Institute paper by Jim Krane and Alex Munton, Qatar should pursue a "strategic hedging strategy" that includes improving commercial relations with Iran and Oman, attracting Chinese investment, and reinforcing security ties with the US through Al Udeid Air Base. QatarEnergy has increased its LNG shipments using the Hormuz route to nearly a third of pre-war levels last month, aiming to become the biggest buyer of US LNG by 2033, according to Wood Mackenzie data cited by the Financial Times. However, this strategy is risky as evidenced by a tanker granted safe passage through Iranian waters being struck last week, highlighting Qatar's dependence on military protection for its shipping routes.
