Beijing and Ottawa have extended a January 2026 agreement to provide Chinese market access to Canadian imports, including canola meal, peas, lobster, and crab, until the end of 2028. In March, following Prime Minister Mark Carney's visit to Beijing, China dropped tariffs on these products. The deal also requires Canada to allow certain Chinese steel and aluminum imports in exchange for market access. Trade Minister Maninder Sidhu stated that this extension will give Canadian farmers, producers, and harvesters stable access to the Chinese market, supporting billions of dollars in export opportunities. The agreement is part of Canada's goal to increase exports to China by 50% by 2030.
