As of November 5, 2026, Jennifer Balcarras, 48, and her daughter Selah Reed, 20, were found dead after a suspected grizzly bear attack near Bella Coola, British Columbia. The pair had gone missing on Sunday, Nov. 1, after going for a walk on the Snooka West Trail. Conservation officers from B.C. are investigating the incident, which occurred in an area where another fatal bear attack took place earlier that year. Community leaders and local authorities have increased safety measures, including police escorts for students to school due to heightened concerns over wildlife encounters. The Nuxalk Nation reported additional RCMP presence and night patrols to ensure youth safety. This brings the total number of deadly bear attacks in B.C. since the 1990s to at least 10 fatalities.
