Jeffrey Weisheit, convicted of murdering two children by setting their home on fire in Evansville, Indiana, was executed early Thursday morning. Lawyers for Weisheit had sought a reprieve from Republican Governor Mike Braun due to concerns about the lethal drug supplier Pharmaneek, whose license and controlled substance registration are currently under probation following an FDA report that found unsanitary conditions at their facility. Despite these legal challenges, the execution proceeded as planned.
Three executions were scheduled for Thursday across three states—Indiana, Florida, and Alabama—the second such occurrence this year. Weisheit's case garnered particular attention due to recent lethal injection failures and controversies surrounding drug suppliers. Indiana Attorney General Todd Rokita stated that the execution provided "long-awaited justice" for the victims' family.
The execution drew scrutiny as it came days after a Tennessee inmate survived two doses of lethal drugs, raising questions about the reliability and ethics of current execution protocols in the U.S.
