On November 5, 2026, flames engulfed a large red banner depicting Donald Trump, JD Vance, Benjamin Netanyahu, and Steve Witkoff in Tehran's Enghelab Square during an anti-American protest. The rally commemorated the anniversary of the 1979 US embassy hostage crisis. Demonstrators chanted "Death to America" and burned US and Israeli flags, while some carried posters demanding revenge for the supposed death of Ayatollah Khamenei in a war initiated by Trump and Netanyahu earlier that year. The protest occurred after Republican losses in the U.S. midterm elections but participants expressed skepticism about its impact on Iran-U.S. relations.
The war was started by Mr. Trump and Mr. Netanyahu, who launched a massive wave of surprise attacks against Iran which killed supreme leader Ayatollah Khamenei and others on February 28 and sparked the wider West Asia war.
"We will kill Trump," read the slogan on some of the flags waved by the crowd
Wednesday's (November 4, 2026) public displays took place following the Republicans' crushing losses in the midterm elections in which the Democrats seized control of Congress.
