This year’s Rockefeller Center Christmas tree was cut down on Thursday and is now en route to New York City, where it will stand at Rockefeller Plaza ahead of the holiday season. The 76-foot-tall (23-meter) Norway spruce, which is approximately 75 years old and measures 50 feet in diameter, originated from a yard in West Edmeston, New York. A crane hoisted the tree onto a flatbed truck for its 200-mile journey to Manhattan. Once installed, it will be adorned with more than 50,000 multicolored LED lights and topped with a 900-pound (408-kilogram) Swarovski star during a televised lighting ceremony on December 2. The display will remain up until January 9, after which the tree will be repurposed into lumber for Habitat for Humanity. This tradition began in 1931 during the Great Depression, when construction workers put up a small Christmas tree at Rockefeller Center to boost morale.
