On Wednesday, a diver was injured by a great white shark off the coast of Percé in Quebec's Gaspé region and was transported to hospital. The incident occurred around 10:30 a.m., prompting Plongée Percé, a local diving company, to immediately suspend all its diving activities for the remainder of the season. Emergency services were quickly involved, providing on-site first aid before rushing the diver to the hospital for further evaluation; their life is not in danger.
Recent years have seen an increase in great white shark sightings off Quebec's Gaspé Peninsula and other parts of Atlantic Canada. The Canadian Shark Attack Registry, which dates back over three centuries with only 15 confirmed incidents, considers such attacks exceptionally rare. Plongée Percé's vice-chair Jean-François Vézina reported on Saturday that the diver sustained multiple lacerations but is currently in stable condition at the hospital.
