New Brunswick’s Point Lepreau Nuclear Generating Station, a 43-year-old plant, has been offline since September 11 due to a heavy-water leak from an instrumentation line. The station's community manager, Kathleen Duguay, confirmed that the leak was identified and requires special equipment like scissor lifts for repair. NB Power, which operates the facility, estimates it will take several weeks to fix the issue. This is the third shutdown this year; earlier in 2023, the plant was offline from April to August for scheduled maintenance. While there is no public risk according to officials, many of the auxiliary components have not been updated since the station’s opening in the 1980s, raising concerns about aging infrastructure despite the core being largely rebuilt in 2009.
