Officer Luis Triunfel, a 33-year-old NYPD officer assigned to the 28th Precinct in Central Harlem, was arrested for stealing a safe containing approximately $50,000 worth of jewelry and cash from a childhood friend's apartment in the Bronx. The theft occurred around 12:15 a.m. on August 31 when Triunfel allegedly entered his friend’s Boynton Avenue apartment and stole a black metallic safe with a key lock, which contained $9,500 in cash, $38,500 in gold jewelry, as well as important documents like the victim's passport, car titles, U.S. permanent residency card, and Social Security card.
Triunfel reportedly returned to the apartment later that day to damage a video surveillance system capturing his crime. The officer also used an NYPD-issued cell phone on August 30 to run a license plate search of the victim’s vehicle. Additionally, he accessed the department's database multiple times between September 3 and 7 to check for updates on the investigation.
On Monday, Triunfel again searched the NYPD database using his own name. He was arraigned in Bronx Criminal Court on Tuesday night and released on his own recognizance with an order to surrender his passport.
