Kerry James Marshall, an influential contemporary artist known for his paintings depicting Black subjects in historical and everyday contexts, recently had a major survey of his work displayed at the Royal Academy of Arts in London. This exhibition then moved to Kunsthaus Zürich and is set to travel to Musée d'Art Moderne de Paris this fall. Marshall's work, which often revisits classic genres like history painting and portraiture, addresses the historical absence of Black artists and subjects in visual culture. His painting Past Times (1997) sold at auction for a record-breaking $21.1 million in 2018, highlighting his growing influence and recognition in the art world. In 2027, The Print Center New York will host the first comprehensive exhibition focusing on Marshall's print work, further cementing his legacy as a pivotal figure in contemporary art.
