In New York City, Mayor Zohran Mamdani expressed condolences on X for Luis Alberto Lopez Castillo, who died while in Department of Corrections custody after facing multiple charges including murder, manslaughter, robbery, and weapons possession. Castillo was accused of killing Ron Marte, a 26-year-old autistic man from the Bronx during an early morning incident at Starlight Park where he allegedly robbed Marte of his cellphone before Martinez shot him. Ron Marte worked at an Amazon warehouse and was walking home when the attack occurred. Mamdani's statement, which did not mention the victim or his family, drew criticism on social media for prioritizing condolences to the accused murderer over the slain victim. The Department of Corrections reported that Castillo died from medical distress while in court custody; they are still investigating the cause of death.
